Five Little Speckled Frogs Illustration
Year: 20th century Origin: USA
Five little speckled frogs,
Sat on a speckled log,
Eating the most delicious bugs.
Yum yum!
One jumped into the pool,
Where it was nice and cool,
Then there were four green speckled frogs.
Glug glug!

No one's quite sure exactly when "Five Little Speckled Frogs" popped up, but it's relatively new, likely appearing sometime in the 20th century. It's considered traditional (meaning we don't know who wrote it) and probably spread because teachers and parents found it really useful for kids.

Its main job is simple: teaching little ones! It helps them count backwards from five as each frog jumps off the log. That jump into the pool also shows basic subtraction – "one less frog" each time.
