Betty Botter

Betty Botter Illustration
Year: 1899 Origin: England
Betty Botter bought some butter
But she said the butter’s bitter,
"If I put it in my batter
It will make my batter bitter,
But a bit of better butter
Will make my batter better."

So she bought some better butter
Better than the bitter butter,
And she put it in her batter
And her batter was not bitter,
So ’twas better Betty Botter
Bought a bit of better butter

The tongue-twister "Betty Botter" was written by the American author Carolyn Wells and first published under the title "The Butter Betty Bought" in her collection "The Jingle Book" in 1899.

The rhyme tells a short narrative about Betty Botter, who buys butter only to find it bitter, then resolves the issue by purchasing 'better butter' to improve her 'bitter batter'. It uses heavy alliteration using the 'b' sound, creating a 'tongue twister' which is difficult to say quickly.
